Dr. Richard W. Mooney OD, 89, of Ken-Mar Acres, Kunkletown, Pa. passed into eternal rest on March 2nd at the Inpatient Hospice Unit of The Lehigh Valley Hospital, 17th & Chew St. Allentown, Pa. He was the husband of the late Rosanne "Pudge" Kudlich Mooney and the companion of Brenda "Cookie" Kuntz of Kunkletown. Born in Palmerton, Pa. he was a son of the late William Richard & Myrtle Jones Mooney. After graduating from Palmerton High School in 1938 at age 16 he enrolled in the Pa. College of Optometry in Philadelphia where he received his degree at age 19. Since he was not allowed to practice in his profession until he was 21 years of age, Dr. Mooney enlisted in the United States Army where he achieved the rank of Sergeant during WWII in the Medical Section, 3384th Svc. Unit. At 21 years of age, Dr. Mooney opened his practice of optometry in Lehighton and served the community for over 49 years. At age 89 he was still actively working with his family at Wentz Body shop, Lehighton, as a floorperson/runner. He was of the Lutheran Faith. Among his memberships were the Lehighton Elks Club, The Lehighton American Legion Post 314 and as a true avid outdoorsman, he formerly held memberships in area hunting & fishing clubs. His biggest interest was his family and supporting the endeavors of his children, grandchildren, & greatgrandchildren and acknowleging their accomplishments. When time allowed, he was known to watch Matt Kenseth on the Nascar Circuit and enjoyed watching the competiton at The Mahoning Valley Speedway as well as other local tracks. Dr. Mooney also loved to attend auctions, and flea markets as he collected antiques as a hobby. Surviving are two daughters, Roxanne wife of Gary Wentz of Lehighton, Patricia wife of Randall Holzer of Coopersburg, 4 sons, William R. and his wife Carol of Lehighton, David & his wife Gracey of Tigard, Oregon, Dennis of Mt. Holly, Pa., & Geoffrey and his wife Susan of Sutton, Mass.,1 brother Bruce and his wife Henrietta of Mt. Holly, NJ, 1 sister, Ruth Goepfert of Hummelstown, Pa., 15 Grandchildren, 11 Greatgrandchilden, Nieces & Nephews. He was preceded in death by 1 brother Donald. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, March 5th at 8 p.m. at The Andrew P.Ovsak Funeral Home, 190 S. 4th St., Lehighton with the Rev. Canon Doris S. Bray officiating. Call 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The Interment will be private.
